Team Canada showed the qualities that make Canadian hockey players a rare-breed with their gutsy 7-6 loss in the Bronze Medal game at the 2010 IIHF World Inline Hockey Championships

Karlstad, Sweden - Team Canada raised eyebrows and made the international inline hockey scene take notice in their 7-6 Bronze Medal loss against Sweden at the IIHF World Inline Hockey Championships.

This was the first time since 1998 that Canada had the opportunity to come back to North America with a medal around their necks after a 10 year absence from the event.

Sweden came into the Bronze Medal game as the favorite as they were looking to take their 4th straight Gold Medal this season until they were upset by the Czech Republic in the Semi-Final.

The Swedes medal game experience showed right off the puck drop as they jumped quickly to a 3-0 nothing lead halfway through the first quarter. Team Canada looked nervous but were kept into the game by standout goalie Brett Leggat as the Canadians found their stride.

Canada’s sticks came alive with a Thomas Woods goal on the PP, quickly followed by Kye Benjaminsens short-side backhand roof to pull Team Canada within one goal. Sweden responded near the end of the second quarter ending the first half with a 4-2 score for Sweden.

Again, the Swedes started strong in the second half and pushed the score to 6-3 going into the 4th quarter. Tempers flared and penalties were dished out in the 4th quarter which allowed Canada to begin the comeback. With 30 seconds left in the game, a Dave Hammond goal pulled Canada within one goal at 7-6. A mad dash and heavy pressure from the Canadian squad with an empty net didn’t provide the tying goal, ending the game at 7-6 for Sweden.

As Team Canada entered the event ranked 7th in the world, they constantly proved critics wrong throughout the 2010 tournament by upsetting many powerhouse teams, Germany in the round-robin and Finland in the QuarterFinals.

The 4th place finish moves Canada up the world rankings ladder once again and sets the National Team Program to shoot for the podium in 2011.

Canada Rankings:

2010 - 4th

2009 - 7th

2008 - 9th

2007 - 15th

Entering the tournament as the 7th seed out of 8 in the Top Division, Team Canada proved over and over that they are a determined, underestimated team.

A shootout win against rival Germany and a massive upset against Finland has set up this fateful moment.

Assistant Captain, Dave Hammond chatted today about what this game means to the National Team Program and to himself as he has been a member of the National Team since its return in 2008.

Dave said watching Canada climb from 15th seed to 9th seed to 7th seed and now playing in a medal game is a huge accomplishment.

Karlstad, Sweden - Team Canada will be playing for the Bronze Medal tomorrow from Lofsberg Lila Arena, marking the first time that the National Team Program will have an opportunity to bring hardware home from the Top Division at the IIHF World Inline Hockey Championships.

Coming into the event this year, Team Canada was ranked 7th in the world and faced a very strong Pool including USA, Germany and Czech Republic. After a see-saw round robin that saw teams battle for every point, Canada placed as the 3rd seed using a comeback shootout win against Germany to its maximum.

The Canadian squad came into the Quarterfinals as an underdog, to everyone but themselves. The strongest outing of the event, led by Chris Terry’s 4 goals and Jimmy Carter’s 5 points, took Team Canada into the Semi’s against the undefeated US team earlier today.

The USA has proven time and time again that they are a force to be reckoned with and Team Canada couldn’t crack the code losing 12-3.

With the loss in the semi’s Canada will move into the Bronze medal game against the losing team of the Sweden/Czech Republic game tomorrow for the chance to bring home some proof that the National Team Program is growing stronger and stronger.

Stay tuned to niha.ca for more details on tomorrow’s game.

Karlstad, Sweden - Team Canada showed their grit and determination once again today in the Quarter Final match against Finland.

A see-saw first quarter saw Canada jump into an early lead with back to back goals pushing Canada up 3-1. In a 93 second span, the game turned dramatically. One power play goal and two regular strength goals in that time frame had Finland pushing back to take the lead at 4-3. The goal just kept on coming and the first half ended 6-6 with Canada scoring near the period.

The second half was all Team Canada as the boys jumped out to a quick start scoring the first goal of the half and continuing strong after that. Jumping to a 9-6 lead, the Canadian squad slowed the game down and started fighting against the clock. The Finns were sending a 3-man fore check to smoke Canada out of their own end and the game picked up ending 10-8 for Team Canada.

Chris Terry led the way with a HUGE 4 goal performance, 2 on the powerplay. Terry has been trying to find his touch around the net in the last two games, but stated before today’s game that “this is the one.” Stepping onto the floor with that confidence proved to be the catalyst for his massive performance.

Jimmy Carter had his breakout game today netting 2 along with three helpers. When asked about his performance Jimmy said he tried to keep it simple and focus on using his speed.

Team Canada will play tomorrow evening at 6:00 PM local against the winner of the USA / SLOVAKIA game. Slovakia qualified as the Pool A 4th seed by beating Austria in the crossover relegation game yesterday.

After a tough loss for the final round robin game against the Czechs on Wedensday, Team Canada finished 3rd in Pool A putting them through to the Quarterfinals later today.

Thursday of the IIHF World Championships is either a team’s easy day or the hardest one they’ll have at the tournament. By avoiding the cross-over games and potential automatic relegation, Team Canada was able to use Thursday as a rest-day to focus on today’s 2:00 PM puckdrop against Finland.

Kyle Sheen took a minute to chat with NIHA.CA about the day off and the teams attitude going into this important match. Click here to listen to Kyle’s thoughts

A win against Finland will push Team Canada into the Semi-Finals tomorrow and a guarantee for a Medal game on Sunday. A loss this afternoon and Canada will play in the 5/6 seeding game tomorrow.

In other games Wednesday, Finland toppled Sweden 9-8 in overtime, Slovenia overran Austria 9-2 and USA cleaned up Germany 8-3.

Yesterday in the crossover relegation games, history was made! While Germany beat Great Britain 3-2 to remain in Top division, Austria struggled against Slovakia losing 5-2 and will spend the rest of the tournament down in Division 1. Never before had a team in Top Division lost the crossover relegation game.
